HAVE YOU MET ME YET? I’M HOCO…

I FOLLOW THE H&C GIRLS ALONG THEIR DISCOVERY OF THE DESIGN AND DECORATING WORLD. I’M HERE TO REMIND YOU OF THE SHORT-CUTS, QUICK-FIXES, CHEEKY CHEAPIES AND SNEAKY CHEATS THAT YOU CAN USE IN YOUR DESIGN JOURNEY.

Ok - Christmas has been and gone (and so has all our paycheques). It’s time for some HoCo Design Hacks to spruce up the house for 2019.

Here at H&C, we are big believers that how you live and what you surround yourself with contributes to how you feel. I'm an even bigger believer that how you start the New Year is an indication of how you will spend the rest of the year.

So let’s start the New Year with a stylistic mantra - to spend less money but not sacrifice style.

First Hoco-Hack; how to steal Australian interior designer, Anna Spiro's bedroom style on a budget. Anna is known for her bold, pattern-clashing, layering technique. Her style is charming & comfortable. She is not shy towards colour.

For this styling session, I have given myself a budget of $650. I have started with a ribbed upholstered headboard. Anna almost always has an upholstered headboard, and while ours is not patterned, the vertical format helps add detail and layering to the bedroom. When in doubt, I always pick a white bedspread. This simple one has some texture but will allow my decorative scatter cushions to do the talking. The three scatter cushions are bold, different formats and fabrics. The common link is a shade of blue found in each of them. I have selected some cheeky bedsides from Ikea. The price point is unbeatable, but the main reason is for the second shelf, allowing some beautiful books to stack, adding personality to the room. Some great websites offer you to download & print artworks. I have selected a blue floral, adding another positive pattern clash to the bedroom. A textured ceramic lamp adds some soul, and on the opposite bedside I have splurged on a divine yellow jar & placed an orchid in it. Total price was $623.38 - under budget!

Blue decorative scatter cushion, $59.95. Bedsides, $49 each. Artwork, $6.60. Frame, $10. Book, $25. Ceramic lamp, $39.95. Yellow jar, $66. Orchid, $25.98

Second Hoco-Hack; how to steal London based interior designer, Kelly Hoppen's living room style on a budget. Kelly is known for her repetition with styling pieces, monotone colour palettes, & signature bold stripes. Her style is formal & elegant.

For this styling session, I have given myself a budget of $3,500. I have found a classic style white loose cover sofa. As the sofa design has lots of back cushions I only need two striped lumbar cushions to add some interest. Either side of the sofa for symmetry, I have found two tall brass floor lamps. These lamps add a lot of 'quiet drama' to the living room. I am using the same artwork twice, but I have turned one upside down. The coffee table is slender and quiet a high design, adding elegance to the living room. As a Kelly Hoppen's signature, I place three simple vases in a row on the far right-hand side of the coffee table. A white armchair with a black contrast piping relates to the sofa, yet has enough difference to be playful. A black side table is located next to the armchair. Total price was $3,453.74 - under budget!

Third Hoco-Hack; how to steal Los Angeles based interior designer, Martyn Lawrence Bullard's living room style on a budget. Martyn is known for his different themes of eclectic Hollywood glamour & ethnic sophistication filled with large comfortable pieces & bold designs. Large equals luxury and ‘more is more’.

I have reserved a higher budget for Martyn's inspired living room selection, $6,000. I selected two sofas, one velvet green, which adds luxury to the design, and the other cream sofa is plump and comfortable. On the cream sofa, I will place three scatter cushions which add geometric contrast and some ethnic hues. Martyn is a fan of an indoor plant, so I have added a faux fiddle-leaf fig in a green and grey pot. To continue with ethnic vibe and ‘more is more’ mentality, I have added a striped rug and a carved timber coffee table. On the table is a glamour tray which I will place the metallic decor ball and striped vase on top of. Total price was $5,703.70 - under budget!
