DESIGNING A KITCHEN? Read this first.

I've been asked over and over...

"when designing a kitchen, what's the most important thing to consider?"... I answer "all of it".

It's fun to work out what finishes & what style you will create, but there are some other critical things to consider.

First, determine what layout suits your space, your wishlist and your appliances selection. Select your appliances first & any restrictions you might have, then once you know all your restains you design with your leftover space.

📸 = Induction, Multiple Cooktops, Induction with downdraft.

Gas or Induction seems to be the world's most important debate. My opinion is split 50/50. However, if you have always used gas and love it, don't change & if you have a low budget, stick to gas.

Correct ventilation might sound boring, but it's crucial. A lot of appliances have strict requirements regarding ventilation; fridges, especially bar fridges. Water filter such as Zip & Billi needs ventilation and your rangehood depending on what type, you might need to flue it.

📸 = Walk-in-Pantry, Pull-out-Pantry, Dark Walk-in-Pantry, Glass entry Walk-in-Pantry & Pantry Cupboard.

The pantry has evolved over the years; for some, it has become similar to a second kitchen with ovens & dishwashers, and for other people a drawer or two is sufficient. Food storage is generally dependant on space & lifestyle. Your options are walk-in-pantry, butler's pantry, pullout pantry, pantry cupboard or pantry drawers.

📸 = Wall lights, White round pendants, Track lights, Gold Pendants, LED strip lights.

Lighting in a kitchen is both functional & sets an ambient tone. Ensure there is adequate 'task' lighting where you clean, prepare and cooking food. Task lighting is generally in the form of downlights, under cabinet lighting or wall lights. Never place task lights behind you, as you will create a shadow for yourself. Ambient lights are the desserts of the kitchen design; it is the indulgent bits. Track lights, pendant lights, wall lights & strip lights in the kick plates or under bench can be a great way to add some indulgence.

The other not-so-obvious things to consider; a study nook, step ladder storage, USB power points, vacuum & broom cupboard (don't forget the powerpoint), recycling, spice drawer, wine storage, pet food, art location & cookbook storage.

I hope this helps you create a more considered design leading the kitchen of your dreams. Have fun.
